Grammy Nods (continued. . .)

In December I said Best Rap Album 2013 should go to either Nas‘ Life is Good or The RootsUndun. I still can’t decide. . . Shall I flip a coin? The Roots did some real different stuff on Undun, but Life is Good is a helluva comeback album for NasUndun is more dark and cynical, with political and social consciousness, which is a nice contrast to the big booty hoe / foreign car same old bag of shit coming from guys like 2 Chainz for example. Musically, it is varied, even containing elements of classical music at points, which is pretty damn innovative for a hip hop album. Life is Good is more personal. A sort of a breakup album for now divorced Nas, blended with some reminiscent reflection of the glory days of hip hop. Both concepts for an album are worthy of a Grammy win, but if I had to pick a winner, I guess I’d go with Life is Good. Nas gave it his all this go ’round lyrically, so tip of the cap.

Now for some predictions for the other categories:

Best Rock Album

  • El Camino by The Black Keys
  • Mylo Xyloto by Coldplay
  • The 2nd Law by Muse
  • Wrecking Ball by Bruce Springsteen
  • Blunderbuss by Jack White *:D big grin

How liberally the Grammy people use this term “Rock.” Muse going against Springsteen for the same award? That’s just bizarre. And since when is Coldplay Rock? Nothing against Coldplay, its just they’re not Rock. They have been mislabeled here. The Black Keys album got old fast to me, but still has a chance to win, Muse definitely has a chance of pulling this one off, but I think Blunderbuss will take this one down.

Best New Artist

  • Alabama Shakes
  • Fun.
  • Hunter Hayes
  • The Lumineers *L-) loser
  • Frank Ocean

I don’t care who wins this. I’m guessing it’ll go to The Lumineers. Read this if you care to learn my opinion of those hipsters. The Lumineer’s rival for the best display of Hipster Nonsense, Fun., could just as easily take the Grammy home, though I wish it would go to the under-appreciated Alabama Shakes.

Best Rap Song

  • Daughters by Nas
  • Lotus Flower Bomb by Wale ft. Miguel
  • Mercy by Kanye West ft. Big Sean, Pusha T & 2 Chainz
  • The Motto by Drake ft. Lil Wayne
  • Niggas in Paris by Jay-Z & Kanye West *:| straight face
  • Young, Wild, and Free by Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa ft. Bruno Mars

  • Some Nights by Fun.
  • Babel by Mumford & Sons *:| straight face

I’m thinking Babel sneaks in and takes it. But that doesn’t mean I’m impressed. Oh and Country and Electronica don’t count if you were wondering. But I’ve gone and bored my fucking self with this post. The Grammys Suck. Hopefully some of the performances are cool.

  • Tom Morello

Global Showcase: Alabama Shakes

From Athens, Alabama

Chances are you heard the single Hold On” and got it severely stuck in your head at some point this summer. I admit, I heard the single, liked it, but I didn’t look the band up at all. I just figured it was another good summer song on the radio, and didn’t look into the Alabama Shakes at all. Then I heard I Found You” and Hang Loose” which along with “Hold On” are on their debut album Boys and Girls.”

This band is here to stay. Quite the original blend of alternative / neo-soul / blues-rock. They have this throwback quality about them that I love. That motown sheeeaat nawmsayin? Lead singer Brittany Howard is damn good. So check ’em out.
